Secunda - Four men accused of embezzling funds from a municipality in Mpumalanga have appeared in the Secunda Magistrate's Court, the Hawks said on Tuesday.

Captain Paul Ramaloko said the group appeared in court shortly after they were arrested on Monday.

One of them, municipal IT technician Sihle Mabuya, was released on R15 000 bail after he admitted to hacking into the municipality's system.

The other three, Charles Mabe, Bonga Sithole and Sikhakhane Sibeko, would remain in custody until their bail application on Tuesday.

"Allegations against them were that they installed a device into the Secunda municipality's computers."

The device monitored passwords the company's chief financial officers used for transactions. The group allegedly used the passwords to access the municipal accounts and transfer money to their personal accounts.

The Times reported that a senior bank official alerted authorities about the suspicious transactions. The National Intelligence Agency then started investigations.

"They managed to each withdraw R2.6m and were about to withdraw another R39m when they were arrested."
