Johannesburg - Four people were killed and 10 injured in three separate accidents over the weekend, paramedics and metro police said.

The first accident took place in Cape Town. "On Saturday afternoon, Netcare 911 paramedics responded to a collision at the intersection of Baden Powell Drive and the R44," said Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha.

"Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the roadway littered with accident debris and the twisted frames of the vehicles."

The bodies of two people who had died on the scene were retrieved. Seven others with injuries ranging from serious to minor were stabilised and taken to hospital.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

In another accident, this time in Mondeor, South of of Johannesburg, a car was found lying on its roof in the middle of a road after three vehicles collided.

"Paramedics found two men lying trapped inside the overturned vehicle," said ER24 paramedic service spokesperson Russel Meiring.

The passenger had sustained numerous injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene, while the driver was rescued from the car using the jaws-of-life equipment. He was in critical condition and treated before being taken to hospital.

A third man was also treated on the scene. The other two vehicles involved in the crash were found parked on the scene.

Local authorities also attended the scene to conduct further investigations.

Meanwhile, the driver of a Hyundai i20 was killed when he lost control of his vehicle and collided into a tree on Van Dyk Road, near Carnival City on Saturday morning.

Ekhurhuleni Metro Police Department spokesman Clifford Shongwe said the damage to the car suggested it had been driven at a high speed.

A passenger was seriously injured and taken to hospital.
