Durban - Four people died and seven were injured in two separate accidents in KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend, ER24 said on Sunday.

Three people were killed and four left injured in the first accident which occurred late on Saturday night on the R603 in Umbumbulu, Pietermaritzburg.

"Paramedics from ER24 arrived on the scene and found debris from the two vehicles scattered across the scene," said the paramedic service's spokesperson Werner Vermaak.

Three of the people were found dead, still trapped inside their vehicles. Four people were found with various injuries ranging from moderate to severe and were freed from the wreckage, using specialised equipment.

In the second accident, a man was killed and three others moderately injured in a collision on the N3 highway near the Marianhill Toll Plaza.

The man was declared dead on the scene, while the three injured were taken to hospital.

The exact circumstances of the accidents are under investigation.
