Cape Town – Four people have died after a whale watching charter boat carrying about 33 people capsized near Hout Bay, Cape Town on Saturday afternoon, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

Of the 33 to 34 people that were on the boat, 4 people have been confirmed dead, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon told News24.

Search and rescue operations were still ongoing for the last few passengers unaccounted for.

The charter boat was at Duiker Island when it capsized at about 15:00, Lambinon said.

NSRI rescuers as well as several other charter boats managed to rescue many of the people who had fallen into the sea.

Lambinon said authorities were asking the public to stay away from Hout Bay while rescue operations were ongoing.

I am a cab driver and regularly take tourists to the boat going to Seals Island. Last time I been on that boat the water was very choppy with huge swells. I could not understand how the boat company could take clients in such dangerous conditions. It was so windy and yet the boat was less those five meters from the rocky island. I got so scared and decided to never set my feet back on that boat.

Had the same experience, I am not a sailer but know natures power, the guy nearly touched the rocks, nearly wet myself, my wife cannot swim, and I am not a lifesaver, the area I think must also be fullof sharks, seals being their staple diet!

Hi, I noticed your comment about the capsized boat, we where busy diving in the aria and I am sure we passed by your boat on our way out. Was it the blue boat with a glass bottom hull that capsized?
