Johannesburg - Four people were shot dead in eZakheni, Ladysmith, on Friday night in an attack that might be related to a village feud, KwaZulu-Natal's community safety department said on Saturday.

"While the motive of the incident has not been established and remains a subject of police investigations, [community safety] MEC [Willies] Mchunu hopes it is not related to the long standing village conflict involving the Mabaso and Gamede families which has led to a number of deaths in the area," a statement from Mchunu's office said.

Initial details suggest those who were gunned down are from the Mabaso family.

Twenty-seven people were killed in the area in separate incidents last year.

Mchunu appealed for calm and restraint while police investigate

"We have convened several meetings and peace talks with all the concerned stakeholders in the area to put an end to these killings. It is therefore disappointing that four people have been killed when great strides have been made to resolve the conflict in the area," said Mchunu.

Department representatives and the police were trying to set up peace talks.

"We are once again calling on all concerned to cease these attacks and resume talks aimed at finding solutions to their concerns."

The department also urged anybody with information on the shooters to tell the eZakheni police.
