40 held for driving in emergency lane

2012-03-15 11:32

Johannesburg - More than 40 people were arrested for driving in the emergency lane on Beyers Naude Drive in Johannesburg on Thursday, Gauteng traffic police said.

Most of those arrested were minibus taxi drivers, but there were some private car owners, department spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo said.

They were arrested for reckless driving and taken to the Honeydew police station.

- Did you see this? Is it a common transgression? Send us your story and photos.

So they're not taking brobes anymore?

      jordaanjean - 2012-03-15 11:54

no but still some bribes ;)

      S - 2012-03-15 11:54

Urban dictionary: Brobe = An ordinary t-shirt ripped directly in half. Could be any t-shirt, but MUST be ripped in half to be considered a brobe. What would the cops do with all those brobes they take?

      Quinton - 2012-03-15 11:58

News24 readers are just hillarious. At least you guys brightened my day as I had a good laugh at the above rsponses.

      camp.j - 2012-03-15 12:06

Here's a suggestion, do this more often, fine their asses and use the dosh to pay for our new highway!

      procold2 - 2012-03-15 12:19

good idea camo.j bbut the problem is the bucks will get spent on somthing totally unimportant.

      Alan - 2012-03-15 12:32

They can use 4 brobes to make new robes

      Alison - 2012-03-15 12:33

they need to go to Olivedale clinic in the mornings - they would make a few bucks there!!!

      Alan - 2012-03-15 12:42

@Alison - can they use the Emergency lane to get there?

      roberta.keeling - 2012-03-15 12:52

@Alan - if you make robes with 4 brobes, what do you do with the "B"s then?

      Alan - 2012-03-15 12:58

add 8 "EE's" to them , then they become BEE Compliant Brobes of course.

      Dianna - 2012-03-15 13:01

I must admit the comments are often more interesting to read than the story ! Had a good laugh at these replies to Miyo27!

      Alan - 2012-03-15 13:07

so by extension .. you will end up to be berobed in bee robes made from 4 brobes, and they are called BEErobes

      customdesign - 2012-03-15 13:11

      you are brobebly right

      customdesign - 2012-03-15 13:14

wonder if they will be let out on brobetion or be set free to annoy the rest of us? :'D

      Alan - 2012-03-15 13:20

well - if we do a probe into whether they tried to brobe a man with a blue strobe, they may have to derobe.

      mstemela - 2012-03-15 13:33

@Stirrer...thats very funny...i laughed out loud...(lol),dammn miyo27..u just made this story more funny

      Alan - 2012-03-15 13:33

@Stirrer - so if a brobe costs the shirt off your back, is that brobe then equal to 2 brobes, being 2 half shirts?

      yolie.Landa - 2012-03-15 14:26

LOL @brobes miyo27 Followed by the world class explanation frm Urban dictionary Stirrer #I die. YOu guys are hillarious

      MikeBrassellSA - 2012-03-16 11:33

Thought it was a crome to take a brobe.

      Barker - 2012-03-16 14:14

      @procold2 - like KFC and Coca-Cola

      Gestoffle - 2012-03-16 14:14

      @miyo27 - do u know miyo28? or miyo26?

      Barker - 2012-03-16 14:18

This broblem is the same as the SAPS has with vehicles marked that they are from BRAPAN. You know the town. It is near Spings and Boxberg.

      Nelia - 2012-03-16 21:29

Your typo created so much entertainment. Thank you :-) :-)

  • larry.piggott1 - 2012-03-15 11:50

Good. About time someone took action, particularly against the Taxi drivers.

      Alan - 2012-03-15 13:11

WTF - these poor taxi drivers only used the emergency lanes to get out of the way of the Blue Light brigades

      Alan - 2012-03-15 13:25

oops - a thumbs down there. **Lack of sense of humour alert!*

      Mike - 2012-03-16 14:22

I can't believe that so many commenters are actually pleased that we are being arrested for minor traffic offenses. This is going to get a lot worse, mark my words, we'll see how happy you when locked up for the weekend for skipping a stop street.

      Michael - 2012-03-16 18:03

They should come to Durban, I see taxi drivers use emergency lanes EVERYDAY! Where are the traffic cops?

  • alu.ntsandeni - 2012-03-15 11:50

Good Job, tired of this lot acting as if they own the roads..

      Jeeves - 2012-03-15 13:24

This news is very happy news indeed!

      Alan - 2012-03-15 13:27

yeah - this should 'kerb' the Taxi driver's habits.

  • Suzanne - 2012-03-15 11:50

That is awesome!!!! Its about time the metro cops did something about people driving in the emergency lane on Beyers Naude. Well done to them!

      Alan - 2012-03-15 12:33

Ditto!! Some good news a last!

      JohhnyBGood - 2012-03-15 13:16

Get to Hendrik Potgieter as well.

      npretorius2 - 2012-03-15 13:21

Its about time, next to tackle is the stretch of N1 South between Rivonia offramp and William Nicol onramp... I see at least 50 taxis SPEEDING past in yellow line while traffic is standing still just a few centimetres away. So dangerous

      Martin - 2012-03-15 13:28

johnnybgood, its terrible on hendrik potgieter in the mornings, just wanna attack the crap that jumps que's including my boss who goes right past me up that emergency lane, useless bunch, and they wonder why people beat the hell out of them

  • S - 2012-03-15 11:51

  • Dries - 2012-03-15 11:52

And the Metro police are only now waking up. This is happening for years without any prosecutions to these lawless drivers.

      paulvkeys - 2012-03-15 12:20

forget what's happened in the past at least action has been taken today. Lets hope it's part of a crackdown on these guys.

      Martin - 2012-03-15 13:28

its coming up to easter, like xmas they need bribes

      Rudi - 2012-03-15 18:21

You should know that the taxi industry is worst than the mafia. They have turf wars and drive by shootings. The Metro cops are probably scared stiff tonight.

      PB - 2012-03-16 14:11

Martin, I've also noticed a marked increase in speed traps on the N4 lately. Someone has to finance the cops' holidays

  • Cast53 - 2012-03-15 11:54

Next please go to Hendrik Potgieter and 14th Avenue, will catch hundreds in a morning session

      Jean-Pierre - 2012-03-15 12:33

I agree I sit in that traffic every morning and the emergency lane is used as an extra lane. There are actually more private cars doing it on Hendrik Potgieter

      Michael - 2012-03-15 13:19

... and they must also check the dusty emergency lane along R55 between Blue Hills crossing and Kyalami.

      Kent - 2012-03-15 13:32

See how the taxis use the off ramps to get back on the highways as a short cut, but now they block the off ramps and the traffic is not moving on them aswell.

      Barry - 2012-03-15 15:36

Private vehicles driving in the emergency lane on Hendrik Potgieter this morning, managed very successfully to hold up an emegency vehicle that had the audacity to drive in their "jump the queue and cut in" lane

      mswanepoel - 2012-03-16 12:08

Yeah. It makes complete sense to stand behind cars for fifteen minutes when I'll be turning left in Five Hundred Metres. How about they spend more resources on actually widening the roads.

  • Andre - 2012-03-15 11:56

Bravo!, now for the rest of SA as well. Where are the cops in the mornings when traffic is at it's worse? - having breakfast until peak hour has passed?

      Wade - 2012-03-15 12:26

hmm.. they seem to be standing across the church near my house in the morning trying to catch reckless drivers but the roads so quiet i dont think they catch many...

      Michael - 2012-03-15 13:24

I saw them on three occasions this week manning a speed trap under the olifantsfontein bridge - in slow peak hour traffic nogal. Wonder if they were cheking those driving below minimum speed of 60km/hr on a freeway!

  • Raymaree - 2012-03-15 11:56

Perhaps the cops should stop hiding behind bushes trying to catch motorists going a little faster than the speed limit, and start a serious campaign on these idiots who cause terrible traffic jams by riding in the emergency lanes. And this should be done country wide - then the municipalities would score financially.

  • Marion - 2012-03-15 11:57

What about the guys who were caught on SABC2 traffic cameras driving across the yellow lines so that they could jump the queue at an offramp this morning?

      Alan - 2012-03-15 12:34

Yeah Marion - get yourself a blue light so that there are no rules! :)

      Steve - 2012-03-15 12:59

@all, You are right Marion hope this is not just a "one day" event. Congrats to Metro Cops keep up the pressure. It is this sort of action that can only reduce road rage.

      Alan - 2012-03-15 14:19

dont take him seriously seanp .. he is just stirring.

  • Anthea - 2012-03-15 11:57

      Martin - 2012-03-15 13:30

i carry bribe cash with a recorded serial number, if they want it they can have it all the way to the holding cell

      Marion - 2012-03-15 13:32

      Love it Melusi...

  • Paul - 2012-03-15 12:07

Hahaha it is normal just watch the N4 comming into Pretoria and almost without exception it is all TAXI Drivers!

      Rohin - 2012-03-16 11:54

I'm happy to see them doing this but I drive the N3/N1 stretch daily, and it's not always taxis that end up driving in the emergency lane to try and avoid the traffic jam. We're quick to blame the taxi drivers - and yes many of them are lunatics, but we can't turn a blind eye to other civilians with the attitude of if the taxis do it - so can I.

  • paulvkeys - 2012-03-15 12:13

about ******** time! well done JMPD!

  • evdwesthuizen1 - 2012-03-15 12:15

But according to some well placed sources, this is NOT an arrestable offence. Under AARTO it is a fine of R1000-00. 40 people now to appear in our already backed up courts?

      wesleywt - 2012-03-15 13:16

Reckless driving is an arrestable offense. Fire that lawyer that told that it isn't

      kenneth.roselt - 2012-03-16 13:11

Wesley, check AARTO code 5006, these people, all of them will walk free, no fine nothing, but had they been fined as the AARTO charge sheet says, they wouldn't have a chance. a good lawyer will get them off scot-free.

      Barker - 2012-03-16 14:32

JMPD can only issue AARTO infingement notices. This is not AARTO related due to Gauteng Police and not JMPD doing the arresting. They are not constrained by AARTO.

  • James - 2012-03-15 12:18

So glad about this. I sit on this part of Beyers everyday, and watch these yellow lane cruisers come past, and then cut in front of me when they see cops or where the road narrows nera the N1 onramp. Chops.

  • Nick - 2012-03-15 12:19

Did you seen this? Is it a common transgression? uhhh .... it's part of everyday life in South Africa !!

  • pboot - 2012-03-15 12:20

Brilliant and well done Metro......wonder who paid what fines, now that would be an interesting talk point !!!!

  • TBlogger - 2012-03-15 12:23

Bwahahahahahahahaha, Serves you right.. Drive like fools while the rest of us actually wait in traffic.. Start doing it everywhere else too!! Whoop whoop :)

      Owen - 2012-03-17 00:00

Please don't forget that parking offence you ignored, your ''' will end up in jail. Abombnation has been uttered.

  • Paulo - 2012-03-15 12:23

hoorhaaaaa-they been driving like that for years-i guess better late than never.

  • Luyanda - 2012-03-15 12:23

Thats not new, they are doing it everyday, is it the first time cops were at work today? Taxis are being exempted from toll fees as they would have blocked roads and commit violence.

  • MSGRule - 2012-03-15 12:25

    Weee hee happy days.

  • jim.dickson2 - 2012-03-15 12:25

      evdwesthuizen1 - 2012-03-15 12:29

ja. the rest had bribe money on them.

  • Sanet - 2012-03-15 12:29

    next...William Nicol offramp please

  • godesha - 2012-03-15 12:31

Good, I like this a lot.

  • Craig Miller - 2012-03-15 12:32

Fantastic!! Please do again on Witkoppen & William Nicol!!

      Linda - 2012-03-15 12:39

If they arrested all the taxi drivers who drove in the emergency lane/gravel verges of William Nicol - there would be no taxis left on the road! I wonder why the police have suddenly decided to start enforcing traffic bylaws after turning a blind eye for the last 15 years? Perhaps hard times means that the bribes are no longer so forth coming - or perhaps they have instituted a reward system to incentivise the issuing of fines. Whatever - lets hope that this continues and is implemented across Johannesburg.

  • Jacqueline - 2012-03-15 12:35

best i don't follow the taxi drivers anymore hehehehe

      Alan - 2012-03-15 16:03

  • Natascha - 2012-03-15 12:37

only 40 - perhaps the cops should hang out at Wemmerpan, you'd get triple the amount of idiots driving in the emergency lane on any given day.

  • Rob - 2012-03-15 12:38

Had a client out from Europe recently who asked why it is that the emergency lane is only used by the people of colour and wanted to know if there is a separate set of rules for them......

      Riaan - 2012-03-16 09:37

Although this is a controversial statement, I see precisely the same every day. It's like some "people of colour" think the rules don't apply to them.

      Rohin - 2012-03-16 11:55

bollocks, I see many colorless people along the N1/N3 driving behind the taxis in the emergency lanes on a daily basis.

      Barker - 2012-03-16 14:33

      The new Apartheid?

      Owen - 2012-03-17 00:06

Don't start, some people know how to negotiate, the others jot down the bill n*.

  • Ronel - 2012-03-15 12:39

they need to go to on ramp William Nicoll to Rivonia - in the morning

      Owen - 2012-03-17 00:08

      Leave home earlier

  • Joubs1957 - 2012-03-15 12:39

The cops were only doing this because they cant sit behind bushes with speedtraps in the rain.

It is about time something gets done, most of the taxis that I see have no respect for the law

      Jana - 2012-03-15 13:07

i'm on beyers every morning and see how these idiots drive on the emergency lane....followed by a majority of black people (this is an honest observaton & not racist comment) while the rest of us wait like good citizens in the left hand lane. LEKKER KRY VIR JULLE.

      Owen - 2012-03-17 00:13

Sorry Gary, please tell that that most people are more tanned anyway.

  • Lynda - 2012-03-15 12:49

Until the taxi industry is regulised and drivers are paid in a less pressurised way the taxi drivers will do anything to get as many people to as many places in the least time possible and no laws are going to stop them

      Alan - 2012-03-15 12:53

Whaahaa - now that is a good one! Ragulating the Taxi Industry. The Taxi Industry rules the roost in SA - The Govt. always backs down to them, including with the Toll roads. Why - methinks the way the Taxi Industry are laws unto themselves, it is just a training ground to become poliicians.

      Schmee - 2012-03-15 13:02

      More fines will stop them.

      Mike - 2012-03-16 14:31

@Schmee: I think that more fines will just put their prices up - nothing more. Fining is NOT intended to stop people committing crimes - it is merely another form of stealth tax.

      Barker - 2012-03-16 14:37

Too bad News24 does not have spell checker. Regulise and Ragulation are things we do when we are under the affluence of inchohol.

      Owen - 2012-03-17 00:19

hey Barker, and acting like a spell and grammer policeman is a good way to say you haven't an honest opinion.(dear god, please make sure i worded this correctly)

  • Robert - 2012-03-15 12:52

Fine them, because they always force their way back into traffic once they have passed a couple of cars - impatient basterds

      Owen - 2012-03-17 00:23

Nyi, 20 people? it is your duty to give them a gap.

  • dgduif - 2012-03-15 12:55

    This is normal practice!

  • somesanityplz - 2012-03-15 12:58

    good work..

  • seanpresherhughes_1 - 2012-03-15 12:59

"Is it a common transgression?" is an understatement! I hope that these drivers serve jail term. Why must all other drivers patiently in the queue while these common/regular transgressors get away with this. This was always a very serious issue for me and especially the fact that the metro never seemed to be there to witness it and take action. I just wish that these transgressors would realise that we ALL want to get to our destination just like they do!

      Owen - 2012-03-17 00:28

"common"? People are starving and getting killed and your priority is death sentence for traffic offenders?

  • Schmee - 2012-03-15 12:59

Give the cops a bells, in fact give them a case each. Finally they are doing a job worth doing.

      Schmee - 2012-03-15 13:00

Oh and please send them down to KZN to train our cops.

      Alan - 2012-03-15 13:01

      and give them whistles

  • Lyn - 2012-03-15 13:04

      Owen - 2012-03-17 00:38

Policemen and their children eat mixed fruit jam. smoke that!

  • MK.Mark.II - 2012-03-15 13:12

Yup. Go to Hendrik Potgieter in from of Hillfox. As afriend from Cape Town said a few week ago when up. It is very nice of Gauteng to supply the taxis with their own lane. Even mark it yellow.

      Terry-Lee Heuer - 2012-03-15 13:45

cape town also supply taxis with their own lane marked yellow in Main road in fact even better the taxis on the left that need to turn right further up to the taxi rank drive in the oncoming traffic's lane but even better is how courteous the vehicles on the other side are they stop flash the taxis to show them to go and there's no hooting during this time all this illegally done and you stuck with taxis on either side of you travelling in the same direction and by the way never ever metro police around!!! I know I travelled that road every morning for a long time the bad thing is there are many pedestrians and where the turn is to the taxi rank I fear someone is going to be knocked down or killed by a taxi driver cause of the quick turn they make there I've seen pedestrians jump out of the way for these taxis!!

      Owen - 2012-03-17 00:42

Calm down Terry, nobody squashes their own customers. It's those blixim ou's that squash people.

  • Samantha - 2012-03-15 13:12

here's a note to the idiot cops on Modderfontein Road, dont park so far down the road cos all the yellow lane driving happens on the top and they come back into the lane before the bottom cos they know the cops are there- you would make an absolute fortune!
