Bloemfontein - Forty-eight people were arrested for public violence in Matoporong township, in Reddersburg, on Monday, Free State police said.

Sergeant Ikobeng Hlubi said residents had been protesting about service delivery.

"They were throwing stones and damaged the municipal building, the library and the supermarket."

The N6 in Reddersburg was closed because there were stones in the road.

Hlubi said locals were angry about an unsatisfactory response to a memorandum handed to the municipality three weeks ago.

"[The municipality] has managed to calm the community down and they are having a meeting now to address their grievances."

Hlubi said the N6 should re-open later on Monday.

I wonder why people has to vandalized public building etc in order to be heard. People were promised heaven and earth during election and now they are demanding what was promised.- Free house, Free electricity, Free Water.

Really? They were promised free house, free electricity and free water? I'd be jolly cross too then. But I still wouldn't destroy the free library.

I understand that these people are frustrated but this kind of behavior gets you nowhere. If you don't like it, Stop voting for the ANC!

Can't understand why they would destroy public buildings. Now those buildings will need repairs, taking more money away from service delivery. But its ironic that JZ said service delivery in SA is best its ever been...He clearly does not watch news or he turns blind eye to these protests
