Polokwane - An armed robber who killed an officer during a confrontation with police in 2016 has been sentenced to 48 years in jail, Limpopo police said.

Aretse Nkabang Moraba, 33, was found guilty of murder, armed robbery, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in the Limpopo High Court in Polokwane on Wednesday.

Moraba shot and killed Constable Kekana Pule Edward in April last year.

“The deceased member was with other police officials, tracing the accused for armed robberies when the accused opened fire from inside [a]...house [in] Ga-Mogashoa,” police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said.

Edward was shot in the throat and died on the way to hospital.

Mojapelo said police welcomed the sentence, and hoped it would deter criminals.
