Johannesburg - Five men appeared in the Mdantsane Magistrate's Court on Thursday after two spaza shops were robbed at gunpoint, Eastern Cape police said.

Captain Ernest Sigobe said the men faced charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, theft, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The case was postponed to March 12 for a bail application.

Sigobe said the State would oppose bail as the five had been linked to other crimes of a similar nature.

Yolanda Lumko, 21, Mzimkhulu Kweya, 25, Mbuyiseli Nukwana, 26, Zukisa Samuel, 27, and Melikhaya Phamba, 22, were arrested on Tuesday in Mdantsane after armed robberies at two spaza shops.

An undisclosed amount of money, airtime, and six cellphones were taken from the shops during the robberies and were found in their possession, said Sigobe.
