Johannesburg - Five people have been arrested for public violence in Ekangala, Bronkhorstspruit, east of Pretoria, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

"The situation is quiet now in the area and police are patrolling the area," police spokesperson Johannes Japhta said.

On Saturday, the SABC reported that the situation in the area was volatile and that roads had been blocked.

It reported that the unrest started when people found out that a resident had died police custody after being arrested on Christmas Day.

According to the broadcaster, community members gathered to march to Ekangala police station on Saturday to demand the release of other residents arrested following a protest on Friday.

Japhta confirmed that residents had taken to the streets, but he could not comment on the death in custody and said the matter was being handled by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).

An Ipid spokesperson could not be reached for comment.

The five men arrested would appear in the Ekangala Magistrate's Court on Monday, Japhta said.
