5 arrested for brutal Limpopo murder

Johannesburg - Two people, one of them a policeman, were arrested in Magatle, south of Polokwane, on Sunday for killing a man and dismembering his body, Limpopo police said.

Matete Mphahlele, 34, was beaten to death with pick handles by four men and a woman on Tuesday, Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said. They apparently suspected him of planning an armed robbery.

The attackers attempted to throw Mphahlele's body into a pit toilet in Mathibela, near Magatle.

"It is suspected the body could not go through the pit toilet and the body was then cut into pieces, and thrown into the toilet," Ramatseba said.

Three were arrested on Friday evening after the body parts were found.

The five people, aged between 22 and 55, allegedly also severely assaulted Mphahlele's girlfriend before he was killed.

They were expected to appear in the Mahwelereng Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of kidnapping, assault and murder.

Yes if this is the first bit of news I have to read on a Monday morning it suddenly makes me think of apartheid laws and flowing from that why, further thinking of human rights, I do not have the right to live in a civilised society. We were born into what we have without any way whatsoever to change it. I really wanted to be proud of my country like people in some other countries, but that would be stupid and if anybody can give me hope for the future, please do.

  • Jannie - 2011-12-05 06:48

Guys please stop comparing these barbaric actions with apartheid !!!

      Lynn - 2011-12-05 07:31

There is no comparison. This is worse.

      buddy.pillay - 2011-12-05 07:38

Criminals come in all guise and forms,in what ever society. Sickos are ever where. Blaming the anc or any other is just passing the buck. Communities have to work together with organizations to change their Behaviour. Barbaric acts cannot be tolerated.

Shoot them all and shove them in the same toilet. Savages.

  • Tshivhombela Fhatuwani - 2011-12-05 07:36

I wouldn't complain if he was caught robbing or raping but acting on suspicion is totally uncalled for.

  • Vivian - 2011-12-05 08:40

Savages man, when will this crap stop. Is there no value on life any more. It seems that anyone can be next if they get into an argument with another person as its becoming more acceptable. People kill way too quickly in this country and drastic measures need to be implemented to stop these senseless murders

  • Garth - 2011-12-05 08:49

Above the law. During the later years of apartheid, the anc in an effort to undermine the authority of the government, encouraged their supporters in the townships to take the law into their own hands and thereby negate the need for SAP policing in the townships - communism 101. They succeeded with the assistance of the SAP and the SADF - the mindset was : `They are doing the work of removing the criminal element for us, which makes our jobs of keeping the peace easier.' Necklacings, stonings, beating, stabbings, gang rapes, `normal' murders, all assisted the SAP in controlling the crime in the townships. And, as with this case, many murders of convenience were committed under this guise. Problem is, no one has told these good people that the civil war is over and that they, the majority, achieved their aim of self governance. So, the result is this rampant lawlessness and vigilantism that we experience these days. Every day ignorants of the ruling ineptocracy spout nonsense about the continuing struggle, about ending apartheid, about eradicating white privilege, so these poor ignorants believe that the law is still theirs to take. Only once the useless anc make themselves publicly accountable for all that is wrong in SA, will this country revert to sanity.

Naledi - Just posted Report comment I find it strange that you would say that seeing that humanity has always been brutal. I mean its such simplification to equate current south african brutality with Apartheid. When Africa was colonized they did experiments on black africans where they would cut open their skulls to measure brain difference. In Roman times dismembering an enemy was the norm. Another case in point is the white girl and the boyfriend who dismembered someone and skinned them(or is it okay when non-black people do it.There are lot of cases in europe and America where people are dismembered. This has nothing to do with race, its sick people in general. I find it unfair that we equate brutal crimes with Skin colour. And would have never heard it during apartheid because they never published anything(old secrecy bill)

      Annelise - 2011-12-05 09:23

Naledi. I don't think it is meant as a race. I also agree that there is sicko's whatever their race. But in the apartheid days you would get hung for crimes like this, so it happened less. Now lawlessness seems to be the order of the day.If it was an Olympic sport South Africa would tale gold, silver and bronze!

      Archie - 2011-12-05 11:24

New secrecy bill will be out soon then you wont hear any bad news, if we brought back the death penalty and applied it to absolutely positive murder cases ,our jails would empty and the thousands of illegal criminals from the rest of the world ,europe included will leave.

  • dix.marks1 - 2011-12-05 09:03
