Polokwane - Five detainees have escaped from police holding cells in Polokwane, Limpopo police said on Wednesday.

They escaped sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, said Colonel Ronel Otto.

"At this stage it is not clear how the suspects managed to escape, but investigations into the circumstances behind the incident are ongoing," she said.

The men have been identified as Mackford Mangena, Samuel Legodi, Edwin Maleka, Joseph Mathipa, and Sello Matlala. Three of them are aged 19.

Mangena and Legodi faced accusations of armed robbery, Mathipa was accused of robbery, Matlala of rape, and Maleka of housebreaking and theft.

"Members of the public are advised not to apprehend the suspects as they might be armed and dangerous," said Otto.

  • george.tjoens.3 - 2013-01-09 13:59

Goes to show that whatever means we currently have to keep them behind bars, is one step short of the criminal's creativity to get out. What a lovely country we would have if all this negative creativeness could be turned into positive actions. Well .... we can only hope

The past two weeks we praise police in pretoria west for a wonderful job done. Now other police let the thugs out to the community, cause jail is secured 24hrs a day.

  • dianne.neyt - 2013-01-09 14:23

I am always amazed at how these thugs "escape" so frequently. Food for thought!

  • ravin.govinden - 2013-01-09 14:31

What a joke? Not clear how they escaped. Very clear, police help them escape. Now the criminals are free and the police are sitting fat with the money they were paid. Who suffers at the end, the innocent public.
