Johannesburg - Five awaiting trial prisoners were re-arrested on Tuesday between Lydenburg and Dullstroom after escaping from police cells, Mpumalanga police said.

Sergeant Gerald Sedibe said nine awaiting trial prisoners, who were being held for various crimes including murder and rape, escaped from the Lydenburg police cells on Monday.

"The suspects overpowered two policemen who were feeding them, robbed them of their firearms, then fled. One suspect, Dumisani Mlangeni, 34, was fatally shot in the process," said Sedibe.

He said Tshepo Mkhabela, 23, Marcus Phokane, 45, Isaac Phala, 29, Botana Mosoma, 22, and Elvis Khoza, 31, were rearrested on Tuesday. The firearms were recovered.

They would now face additional charges of escaping from lawful custody and common robbery, Sedibe said.

He said police were still looking for Reginald Phala, 26, Mxolisi Ndlovu, 27 and Mduduzi Mashilane, 22.

The arrested men were expected to appear soon in court.
