5 in court after letter reveals 1999 murder

Johannesburg - Five men will appear in court on Friday for murdering a woman 13 years ago, police said.

Two of the five men were policemen at the time of the crime.

This comes after a letter was found buried beneath a carpet in a house in Kenilworth. The letter begins with the words: "By the time you read this, I will probably be dead".

The letter is apparently a confession from one of the people who killed Tandiwe Betty Ketani in 1999.

Ketani was shot in the head 13 years ago in Johannesburg and left for dead - but she survived and was taken to a hospital.

The 37-year-old mother was kidnapped from hospital and for the past 13 years has been classed as a missing person - until the letter shed light on her fate.

The letter said the suspected killers had abducted Ketani from the hospital using a forged medical note when they realised she had survived, and then shot her dead.

The note was found about two months ago when the owners of a Johannesburg-area house were renovating. It was then turned over to police, who used it to break the case.

The man who discovered the letter said that when his family read its contents, it felt like they were playing parts in a Hollywood movie.

"We were sweating, you know, and I said don't drip sweat on the papers because you are going to damage them," he told Eyewitness News.

This is how God operates...simple letter revelation.

LOL, why didn't God just stop the murder in the first place?

Well Jason, I have asked God similar questions all my life and I have never had any answers - 2012-05-25 13:07

Bless, you will never get answers.

You know Kenneth, I agree with you (I am glad, especially for the families sake, that this letter was found I am quiet sick and tired of these Atheists and Agnostics waiting to pounce on anyone using the Name of God. Don't you fools have anything better to do?

Well, in law the letter amounts to what is called hearsay evidence since its probative value depends on the person who according to the report, will not testify as to its contents in court. Now, there are factors which a court will take into account in admitting the letter into evidence. you can google section 3(1) to 3(3) of the law of evidence amendment act of 1988 or see case of s v shaik and others 2007 SCA in which the court held in "light of the circumstances, it was highly unlikely that the author would have lied. the author did not only incriminate himself but also showed no lack of sincerity, truthfullness or intend to prejudice those mentioned" the case is interesting indeed.

@goitsionedaniel.tidiwe, Correct!! Plus I see a handwriting expert being consulted as well.

Stupid comment goitsi. Cannot be hearsay evidence as nobody "heard anybody saying something" (where the word comes from in case you didn't know) Also, some of the accused have already confessed to the murder. Is that also hearsay evidence? Also, the body has never been found (only missing) which makes it more interesting.
