Bloemfontein - Five gangsters received stiff sentences on Friday after they were found guilty of the murder of Malefetsane Shadrack Mbena of Thabong.

The high court which convened in Virginia, sentenced Lebohang “Makanda” Joseph Mothibedi, 28, to life imprisonment.

Mathata Andries Radebe, 28, Bongani Mangxola, 26, and Wonder Moholi Moeketsi, 25, were all sentenced to 22 years imprisonment, while Teboho Edwin Malobehla, 25, will serve three years in jail. They are all residents of Thabong.

The sentencing follows an incident on March 29 2014, when a clash broke out between the deceased and his friends at a tavern in Streiting, Thabong.

They went out of the tavern and his friends attacked him with sharp objects. Thereafter they took him to the open space near Masimong Mine, next to Erfdeel Road, where they dumped him.

The suspects were arrested two days later in a tracing operation. It was discovered during the investigation that the accused were Zaota gang members and had killed Malefetsane Mbena for leaving the Zaota grouping to join the IJP gang.

Magistrate Corné Van Zyl passed the sentence, while Antoinette Ferreira prosecuted.

Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabethe Mpembe lauded the police and the justice system.

“This shows crime in any form or shape will not be tolerated in our communities.”
