Johannesburg - An accident on the N3 between Pietermaritzburg and Durban is causing traffic delays for visitors travelling south for the Durban July.

Five people have been killed and 29 others were injured in three accidents along the KwaZulu-Natal highways in the early hours of Saturday morning and Friday evening, emergency medical services said.

Three people were killed when a truck and a car collided along the N3 near the Hammarsdale intersection, spokesperson Robert Mckenzie said. One person was injured.

RTI media liason Zinhle Mngomezulu said the truck's load had come lose in transit.

Part of the truck had also caught alight, forcing a closure of the N3 southbound.

Mngomezulu said a clean-up operation is in process, and is hoping to have the highway cleared by 09:30.

Two others were killed along the N2 near Harding when a small bus and a minibus collided. Eighteen people were injured including a 5-year-old who was ejected from the minibus during the crash on Friday evening, Mckenzie said.

"Only the driver of the bus was injured and the more than 20 occupants on the bus did not sustain any injuries."

Ten people were injured in a separate accident on Saturday morning when a bakkie veered off the road and fell down an embankment along the N2 between Stanger and Darnell.

The injured were treated on the scene before being transported to various hospitals for further treatment, Mckenzie said.
