Johannesburg- Five people were killed and eight others were injured when their bakkie was involved in an accident near Qolorha by Sea in Centane, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

Captain Jackson Manatha said the bakkie collided with a Toyota Quantum on Saturday night. All the deceased were occupants of the bakkie.

“It is alleged that the accident was between a Quantum kombi which was driving towards the beach and the bakkie that was driving in the direction of Centane town on its way to Butterworth.

"Two other vehicles were also involved in the same accident. A total of eight people were seriously injured and were rushed to the nearby hospitals,” he said.

Manatha said the cause of the accident was not known and would form part of an investigation. A case of culpable homicide was opened.

“The identities of the deceased are being withheld until their next of kin and close family members are informed of their death,” he said.
