Cape Town – A sting operation has resulted in the arrest of five men when drugs worth more than R1m were seized just outside Reitz on Thursday night.

The Bethlehem Crime Intelligence, K9, and Public Order Policing units were tipped off about a planned drug transaction and the suspects were placed under surveillance for hours, spokesperson Captain Zweli Mohobeleli said on Friday.

"They were tailed from Bethlehem to Reitz, where two vehicles were searched and the drugs recovered," he confirmed.

"Twenty-thousand mandrax tablets, valued at an estimated R1.1m, and two vehicles belonging to the suspects were seized."

The five suspects – aged between 34 and 43 – are from the Western Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho.

Acting Bethlehem Cluster Commander Brigadier Nkaise Molefe applauded the units’ co-ordinated efforts.

"Their diligence has ensured that drugs destined for our streets to destroy lives, mostly of our youths, are seized. Our region will not be used as a haven for peddling drugs," she said.
