Johannesburg - Five teenagers were killed when their bakkie collided with a bus near Flagstaff on Monday morning, Eastern Cape police said.

"They were on their way to school, on the R51 between Kokstad and Bizana," police spokesperson Ernest Sigobe said.

The five were between the ages of 14 and 18.

They were being taken from Gwabeni village, near Flagstaff, to the Sithukuthezi Senior Secondary School in Ntshangase village in Mbizana when the accident happened around 08:00.

Eleven other pupils on the bakkie were injured, and were in a critical condition, along with the bus driver.

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital.

A case of culpable homicide was being investigated.

Eastern Cape Education MEC Mandla Makupula sent his condolences to the victims' families.

"Our province is saddened and traumatised by the loss of these vulnerable young lives," Makupula said in a statement.
