5 raped in North West over weekend

2012-05-07 08:57

Mahikeng - Five women were raped in the North West province over the weekend, police said on Sunday.

Captain Pelonomi Makau said a 47-year-old man was arrested on Sunday in connection with the rape of an 11-year-old girl. It is believed the man gained entry to the girl's house through an unlocked door before he allegedly raped her, Makau said.

"The man is known to the girl as well as her family."

He will appear in the Schweizer-Reneke Magistrate's Court on Monday.

On Saturday, police arrested a 54-year-old grandfather in Delareyville who is accused of raping his 13-year-old granddaughter while alone with her at a family home.

"The grandfather faces a charge of rape and will appear in the Delareyville Magistrate's Court on Monday," said Makau.

Meanwhile, five armed men were sought by the police for allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman near the Imperial Reserve on Saturday.

"The men confronted the woman and her friend before dragging them into nearby bushes. The friend managed to escape while the woman was raped."

Makau said a 17-year-old girl was stabbed in her head and her arm at her house, in Khuma near Stilfontein, on Saturday, by two unknown men before they allegedly took turns to rape her.

No arrests have been made and the girl was rushed to a nearby hospital.

On Friday, a 66-year-old woman from Taung was confronted outside her house by a man known to her.

"The man grabbed her before raping her on the floor," Makau said.

He said the man fled the scene and is still at large.

  • Sharon - 2012-05-07 09:12

What is truly striking about this article is the ages of the victims. Ranging from 11 to 66! These thugs don't care if it is a child or a pensioner.

  • Johan - 2012-05-07 09:18

Sad that this country has to live with this sort of crime.

This is absolutely SICK! When will the Government bring back the death penalty? When one of Mister Zuma's many wives or daughters gets raped? We are fed up! Give the rapists to the people- hell hath no fury like a woman scorned! They will get what they deserve- a slow and painful torture death!

      Siphiwo Mdunge - 2012-05-07 14:56

hang them high by their dicks in public for anyone to see would solve the probem but the gorvenment would regard it as barbaric and not the solution

      koos.meyer.52 - 2012-12-31 18:42

Honestly does Jacob Zuma or anyone in Government read news24?? This is a crisis now...It should be number 1 priority...We have Mothers,Sisters, Daughters and nieces...unfortunately they do not have security like the Presidents wives

      Samantha - 2012-05-07 09:55

i was asking myself the same thing- think we need to print all these articles as well as the murders and send it to him- or post the link on his twitter account!- this is just unbelievable now,

      Brett - 2012-05-07 10:52

Its difficult to read while the snout is deep in the feeding trough.

      Jacqui - 2012-05-07 13:55

      He doesn't read. Period.

      Dave - 2012-05-07 14:05

@Jacqui, Zuma does read....he just doesnt care. Period

  • Jay - 2012-05-07 09:56

is rape apart of African culture???? sure seems that way.

      Junebugg - 2012-05-07 10:11

Please do not insult our culture because of some individuals..If I were to turn around and say is Racism part of white culture..It wouldnt be nice now would it?

      sboh.s.memela - 2012-05-07 10:35

absolutely not, i am shocked at the fact that one would even think so, i dont think rape is part of any culture particularly the "african culture", dont insult our culture

  • Elize - 2012-05-07 09:57

Surely bringing back the death penalty is not up to the goverment to decide, come on let the citizens of this country vote yes or no.

  • bridgette.muziri - 2012-05-07 10:00

The only way to save us women and children from rapists in this wild world is to castrate all who are found guilty. finish!

      zak.cebi - 2012-05-07 12:55

I think i will keep my girl friend looked in my room everytime i go out

  • ntunjab - 2012-05-07 10:04

Remember dat Zooooma was once accused of Rape, so they are learning from their Head master!

  • Andrew - 2012-05-07 10:05

Would some please enlighten me as to why it is that it is predominantly blacks who commit these heinous crimes???

      Jeffrey - 2012-05-07 11:21

Simple Andrew, it's because the vast majority of the population are black, so there will obviously more black people who are rapists than white people. It's a simple matter of demographics.

      theO rAcLe - 2012-05-07 12:20

      And culture

      Sueki Gotha-Billy Fitzgerald - 2012-05-08 01:50

uneducation, but that still does not give them a reason!! and i say its because Zuma does not do anything he shows a blind eye until it happens to someone close to him, he is not a good leader its just a pity that everyone WANTS him as a leader.

      koos.meyer.52 - 2012-12-31 18:46

Plenty of white rapists too, just look at the Cathlic Church...

  • Daniel - 2012-05-07 10:08

5 in one weekend! More than doudble that happens a year in AUS!!! What's wrong with the people's lack of respect for each other in this country? Its really time for government to step up to the plate!

      Bob - 2012-05-07 10:27

Daniel, that's five reported only from the North West, add all the other regions and the rapes that were not reported and the figure is horrendous, I'm pretty sure this government don't see it as a serious crime, if they did surely they would take it a little more serious and actually take some steps to try and drastically reduce these appalling numbers.

  • Shirley - 2012-05-07 10:13

This country is SICK and it needs immediate attention! The rulers however are under the impression we are safe and should have no fear! So either these "leaders" are blind, deaf and dumb or just plainly dont care! Either way we need change, someone with enough integrity to bring back death penalty, hard labour and long sentences!!!Sadly when it comes to vote time, the same victims of these horrific crimes vote for the same incompetancy!

  • autumnlilly - 2012-05-07 10:23

Oh my this is really disgusting. What is hapening to our society?something realy needs to done to the culprits

  • Thapelo - 2012-05-07 10:42

It's easy to that the Death penalty should be brought back, the Government must.\r\nKilling them won't stop others from doing it to others,\r\nWe don't need the government to do something. All we is the people\r\nAfter all the people are the government...united we stand against anything.\r\nTo victims and others may they find strength to wake up everyday.\r\n\Everything we run away from has power over us. Everything we go through we conquer\

      rayno.grever - 2012-05-07 11:02

In this country, the people are not the govt. Name one of these people you refer to as the govt who would willingly release 30000 prisoners early into our already fragile society?

      Thapelo - 2012-05-07 12:47

That's because people don't know the power of Change they have ,what they can do.\r\nWe don't accept things as they are but we expect the government to do something,\r\nWhy can't we do something to change, what is wrong with our country.

      rayno.grever - 2012-05-07 14:14

the death penalty doesn't really prevent crime in certain US states but it might make a few potential rapists think twice about raping our females here. The govt must crack a whip and make examples otherwise when will it end, heck even toddlers aren't safe from rape in SA. So education is where the rehabilitation of our sick nation starts and clearly the ANC has failed its people and victims on that level. I bet all these rapists are uneducated

      Thapelo - 2012-05-07 18:53

It will end when people start standing up against it,\r\nWe can't keep looking the governmt, when we want something done.\r\nWhy can't we as people stand up and even an un educated person knows wrong from right.\r\nWhen are we going stop making education an excuse for the crimes they do,\r\nIf you are not educated, you have something else better...Humanity!

  • Cassius - 2012-05-07 12:15

It all started with the state president, what is the surprise? They are just so unfortunate that there wont be masses behind them to help them get away with it.The law will take its course.

  • Jacqui - 2012-05-07 13:54

    Bloody savages.

  • Johnny - 2012-05-07 14:01

This is not my country anymore. I'm sorry to say that but how can I call myself proudly South-Arican? Should change it to shamefully South-African.

  • Mighty007 - 2012-05-07 15:03

Why rape is evry were now?

  • Vandross - 2012-05-07 19:32

Wow I smell some aphrodisiac in south africa

  • Sueki Gotha-Billy Fitzgerald - 2012-05-08 01:45

law will take its course? this all is happening because the LAW isnt doing anything!!! and this isnt the state presidents fault this is the countries presidents fault! its not happening in 1 state only its all over the country. because nothing is being done!

  • kwassie.modo - 2012-12-31 08:26
