5 trapped, burn to death after crash

Mbombela - Five people burnt to death when their minibus taxi crashed and caught alight, Mpumalanga officials said on Monday.

Three women and two children were killed, provincial community safety, security and liaison department spokesperson Joseph Mabuza said.

"One child was found burnt beyond recognition on the mother's lap... It is hard to determine the child's age and sex because of the severe burns."

It seemed the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree.

"People were flung out of the taxi and then it got stuck in the tree. Shortly thereafter it started to burn and those stuck inside were burnt to ashes."

Nine people survived. Two of them were in a critical condition and seven were slightly injured. It was unclear whether the driver survived.

Officials believe the minibus was heading to Mozambique.

I'm not surprised the way minibus taxi drivers behave on the roads. RIP and condolences.

"The minibus in which they were travelling crashed into a tree...." Indeed. Mini-busses do not, of their own volition, crash into trees. The driver of the minibus, intentionally or negligently caused the minibus to crash into a tree. That is what happened - unless of course, the tree wandered out into the middle of the road.... Journalism at its most PC.
