Durban - A 5-year-old child has been saved from drowning after CPR was performed at the Newlands public swimming pool on Tuesday, paramedics have said.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said paramedics arrived at the pool where they found lifeguards providing life support to the child.

"They indicated that they found the child submerged in the water and upon retrieval found no signs of life. They initiated CPR and managed to regain a pulse. Paramedics initiated advanced life support in order to stabilise the child and later rushed him off to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital for further care.

"ER24 urge[s] parents and adults to take special caution around swimming pools as well as open swimming areas such as beaches and rivers. Direct adult supervision should always take place and people should only swim in designated swimming areas.

"With the festive season on our doorstep, many South Africans will relax on beaches as well as next to swimming pools," Vermaak said.
