50 injured in gas explosion at Olifantsfontein business

Approximately 50 people were injured in a chemical gas explosion at a business on Industry Street in Olifantsfontein on Friday morning.

ER24 medics arrived at the scene at 07:10 and found that the business had already been evacuated.

"Medical services set up a triage area and began to tend to the patients," ER24 spokesperson Russell Meiring said in a statement on Friday.

"Assessments showed that approximately 50 people had sustained minor to moderate injuries. Fortunately, no serious injuries or fatalities were found on the scene."

People were treated for injuries and transported by various services to nearby hospitals for further medical care.

The cause of the explosion was not yet known, but local authorities were investigating.
