The body of the fifth miner who went missing at the Kloof Ikamva shaft earlier this week has been retrieved, mining company Sibanye-Stillwater has confirmed.

"We located him last night [Wednesday] and he was retrieved in the early hours of the morning," Sibanye-Stillwater spokesperson James Wellsted said on Thursday.

Five miners went missing on Monday after they entered an "abandoned working place" at the Kloof Ikamva shaft.

Three bodies were located on the same day, while the fourth was recovered on Tuesday.

Earlier in the week, Wellsted did not want to comment on what the miners were doing in an area that had been abandoned. He did, however, say the temperatures were high in that area, and that it did not have proper access to oxygen.

Sibanye-Stillwater said a "thorough" investigation into the incident would be undertaken.
