Cape Town - Paramedics battled for an hour to save a 5-year-old boy's life after an accident on Oukaapseweg in Silvermine, Cape Town, ER24 said on Sunday

When paramedics arrived on the scene they found a bakkie and an SUV off the road after a head-on collision.

They found a man performing CPR on a 5-year-old boy and immediately took over from him, said ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring.

''Unfortunately, after one hour, no vital signs returned and the boy was declared dead on the scene,'' said Meiring.

Another boy, also aged 5-years-old, was assessed and found to have sustained moderate injuries.

He was taken to the Red Cross Children's hospital for further treatment.

Both drivers were not injured.

A man and two children were travelling in the SUV when the bakkie allegedly swerved into its path.

Local authorities would investigate.
