Johannesburg - Six children travelling to school were injured when a taxi and bakkie collided in Witfield, on the East Rand, on Thursday morning, emergency workers said.

The bakkie T-boned the taxi, ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said.

The children, all in primary school, sustained minor injuries, as did the driver of the bakkie and a passenger.

This was the second reported accident involving schoolchildren on Thursday and one of several since the school term began last month.

Four children and their driver were rescued from an overflowing river near King Williams Town, Eastern Cape, on Thursday morning. The driver tried to cross a flooded bridge while taking them to school. The bakkie was almost swept off the bridge, and paramedics rescued them.

On Tuesday morning, two children and a taxi driver were killed when their minibus struck a pillar of a bridge on the R101 near Pyramid, Pretoria.

Thirteen children sustained critical injuries while five others were in a serious condition. The Star reported on Wednesday that the minibus was pushed off the road by the driver of a turquoise Land Rover.

On Monday, 13 children were injured when a truck and car collided on the N3 in Alberton, on the East Rand. One of the children was critically injured.

Last Wednesday, seven children were killed in Pietermaritzburg when a bakkie overturned and crashed into a house.

Last Thursday, 22 children were injured in a bus accident in Umlazi, south of Durban.

On Friday, eight children were injured when a car hit them outside their school in Reservoir Hills, Durban.
