Johannesburg - Six people died and four others were injured when their minibus taxi overturned and rolled repeatedly on the N3 highway near Villiers, Free State, on Friday morning, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said the driver lost control of the taxi, causing it to overturn.

Several passengers were flung out of the vehicle while it was rolling.

The six were declared dead at the scene, Wicks said.

Two of the injured had to be airlifted to nearby hospitals, while the other two were taken in ambulances.

The truth hurts, but I tend to agree with you.Tradgic, but the realities of life in S.A.Whenever I encounter one of them on the road my senses immediately intensify, red lights start flashing and I start thinking what his possible next move could be.......Imagine one of them driving on Germany's Autobahn.

I always want to challenge the flippant statement that the driver: \lost control of the vehicle\. How can you just randomly \lose control\ if you are driving on a good road, in a straight line and a decent speed? (Like 99.999% of the other drivers of the road). The real problem is either reckless driving, drunk driving or a problem with the vehicle. Stop making excuses for bad driving and making it sound like it was not their fault... Taxi drivers are a nightmare on the road, but I get stopped and fined because I'm driving 128km in a 120km zone...

I was there.. drove past it. Taxi had no roof left. what i saw on the road still makes me feel sick. those poor innocent people who lost there lives over an idiot who probably has no regard for human life.. just how much money he's making and how fast he can get to his destination. thank goodness there was no other car (with other innocent people in it) involved.

The accident was awful. It subdued all the drivers of cars and taxis as we had to stop to let the helicopter airlift the injured. 5 minutes before we had been frustrated with each other trying to get through the toll. Taxi passengers put their lives in the hands of taxi drivers who play god. South Africa come on! We have to stand up to the drivers who kill innocent people. In one day, 20 people lost their lives in a 150 I'm stretch of N3 highway. When are we going to learn not to speed! It sounds awful but we almost need huge billboards of the carnage at taxi ranks to show people what our taxi drivers are doing.

Why the reluctance to investigate the Taxi 'Industry'? What are the dangers of doing so? Do we in fact have any idea how many road deaths in the last year were Taxi related? Or the last 5, 10, or even 20 years? AND the feasibility of the Industry? and it's viability? ... and alternatives? and the petrol bill? .... Reuel Khoza ... you were right! except you left out one element in the report. Cowardice! the government and it's leadership dare not address the problem (not challenge). They're terrified!

This one won't enter the safest taxi driver contest I assume - failed already!! People are loosing their lives and families are beeing broken up due to taxis in this country and all the government can do is have a contest for the "Safest taxi driver" ? What a frigging joke! Apply the laws of the road to all, including and especially taxi drivers then perhaps they will start catching as wake up and start abiding to the laws like we all do! Why do they continually get away with murder (litterally)!?

And as usual, the driver lives to tell another day - climb into another taxi and kill more innocent passengers in future!
