Durban - Six people were killed when two cars collided on the M4 highway near the Blue Lagoon bridge in Durban early on Saturday morning, provincial emergency medical services said.

"There were five occupants in one vehicle and one occupant in the other," said spokesperson Caleb Wang.

"Both vehicles caught fire and the occupants of both vehicles lost their lives. The cause of the accident is now the subject of a police investigation."

The accident happened at around 01:45, he said.

Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said it was believed a car was travelling on the wrong side of the highway when the accident happened.

Meanwhile, a man was killed in an accident on the N3 westbound, near the Pavilion shopping centre, on Friday night.

The man's car crashed into a stationary truck just after 20:00, Jamieson said.

"Paramedics quickly assessed the driver and found that he had suffered fatal injuries and there was nothing more paramedics could do to assist him."

Police would investigate the accident, he said.
