6 drown after boat capsizes

2011-02-21 08:03

East London - Six people are missing after a boat capsized in a dam in Dimbaza near King William's Town in the Eastern Cape, the Daily Dispatch reported on Monday.

Four adults and a child, who are all family members, are presumed to have drowned, while the sixth person, a 14-year-old boy, also drowned when he tried to rescue the victims, the newspaper reported.

"We are not really sure what they were doing out on the dam or what led to the boat getting out of control," provincial disaster management spokesperson John Fobian said.

The accident occurred at about 13:40 on Sunday afternoon.

"We suspect they were just taking a recreational ride before their boat capsized."

The 14-year-old boy jumped into the water and swum towards the boat, but got into trouble about 20 metres into the water and drowned.

No bodies had been found by late on Sunday afternoon, according to the newspaper.

    um, life jacket

      Smaal - 2011-02-21 08:35

Lifejackets are mandatory aren’t they? Sad loss of life. RIP.

      24newsreader - 2011-02-21 09:15

they are only manadatory for children under 12. If you cant swim then you should wear one.

      Mikemcc - 2011-02-21 09:20

@CM and Smaal, in a capsize event it is sometimes the life jacket that prevents you from escaping, the recent Witbank dam incident of a similar nature is a case in point. That said, since no bodies have been recovered there is a good chance that they were not wearing them.

    So tragic. Condolences.

lol "swum" Who wrote this? The regular past tense of “swim” is “swam”: “I swam to the island.” However, when the word is preceded by a helping verb, it changes to “swum”: “I’ve swum to the island every day.” The “’ve” stands for “have,” a helping verb.

Now there has to be a smart@$$ when something so sad has happened. If I were you go join the Department of Education and try educating the majority....

      alwyn - 2011-02-21 09:36

Hey Rem, look's like you need some education too. "If I were you(INSERT COMMA HERE) go join the Department of Education and try educating the majority...."

      Rem - 2011-02-21 09:52

      Whatever @$$h0le

      Seperetla - 2011-02-21 09:57

"Everyday" not "Every day". First one means daily which would be correct in the context of your example. "Every day" would have been more appropriate if you were talking about particular or specified days like, "I've swum to the island every day of November". My point is, a native Englishman born and raised in England cannot write English perfectly everyday without making mistakes. The writer must have had that piece automatically corrected by a word-processor to meet some defined deadline in the media industry. It is actually very pointless to judge like some bored primary school teacher who has spent all her life teaching grammar to five-year-olds. We keep wondering why our children don't learn well these days! Teachers are busy trying to feel sophisticated by comment about grammar on Web news sites. Shuu! Only in SA!

      @Seperetla - Brilliant....

      alwyn - 2011-02-21 10:16

Your derogatory remark really brings out the color in your eyes.

The poor boy who wanted to save them - aye this is so sad. I agree on the life jacket statements too.

  • Neville - 2011-02-21 09:16

What a tragedy, my sincere condolences to the bereaved family

  • WillF - 2011-02-21 09:39

A huge tragedy - especially when its a whole family - but also quite senseless. With the required safety equipment it would have been avoided.

  • 24newsreader - 2011-02-21 10:13

why do you go boating if you cant swim?

      Mikemcc - 2011-02-21 11:49

@24newsreader, your comment is the same as saying we should not use airliners. If safety regulations and concepts are followed there is no reason not to go boating even if you cannot swim.
