Durban - Six people were killed and three injured in a head on collision between a car and a truck on N2 South at the Umkomaas off-ramp on Sunday night, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

"The car with six people was travelling towards Durban when they veered across the centre median and hit head on into a heavy goods truck that was pulling two trailers," Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

"Paramedics and the fire department arrived at the scene and found that the crumpled remains of the car had come to rest in the break down lane of the south bound about 50m from the cab of the truck with the occupants still trapped in the twisted metal."

All six people travelling in the car had died on impact.

Three people from the truck, one of them a small child sustained minor injuries, said Botha.

They were treated on the scene and taken to a local hospital.
