6 policemen sentenced for assault

Johannesburg - Six police officers guilty of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm were sentenced by the Lydenburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, police said.

Warrant Officers Thomas Motau, 38, Egypt Manzini, 48, Harold Mashego, 52, Vusimuzi Maphanga, 44, and Constables Vuma Ngwambe, 30, and Given Mahlako, 30, were found guilty of severely assaulting Oupa Eliot Malebe on 29 April 2009, Colonel Leonard Hlathi said.

Malebe, who was detained for an alleged robbery case, was taken from the holding cells and assaulted by the officials who suspected that he was in possession of a cellphone.

Malebe opened a case against the police, which was investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.

Mahlako who was attached to the Hawks in Nelspruit and Manzini, were each sentenced to three years in prison. Motau and Ngwambe were given two years' imprisonment. Mashego and Maphanga were sentenced to a R20 000 fine each.
