Johannesburg - Eight people, including six school children, were injured when a bakkie and a car collided in Verulam on Monday, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said that the bakkie was transporting school children home when it collided with another car on Old Inanda Road.

Botha said it appeared that the bakkie had veered down a cliff face after the collision.

“The mangled wreckage came to rest against trees, preventing it from rolling further down the mountain, the injured children was ejected from the wreckage and was spread over a large area,” he said

He said that a 13-year old girl, who was pinned between rocks was in a critical condition, while five other children were described as being in a serious condition.

Two people from the car sustained minor injuries.

He said that the eThekwini Fire Brigade, as well as other rescue services, attended the accident scene.

The injured were taken to hospital and police are investigating the cause of the collision.
