Pretoria - A six-year-old boy was left in a serious condition after he was hit by a stray bullet during a robbery at a shopping centre in Centurion, police said.

At around 12:00 on Sunday afternoon a woman in a Range Rover was stopped and robbed by three armed men in a Mini Cooper at a Lifestyle Centre in Centurion, Captain Kay Makhubela said.

They stole the woman's jewellery.

"When the security [guard] at the mall saw what was happening, he opened fire on the suspects. The bullets then hit a boy who was in a car close-by,” Makhubela said.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said the boy sustained a gunshot wound to his right shoulder.

"At this stage, it is not clear if the child was left in the car unattended at the time when he sustained the injury," Vermaak said.

He was taken to hospital.

The three men fled and the security guard was arrested for attempted murder.
