Potchefstroom - Sixty primary schoolchildren escaped an accident unharmed after their school bus crashed into an advertising board in Potchefstroom on Tuesday, paramedics said.

The driver later told paramedics that his brakes had apparently failed, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and crash into a sign board, ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

Meiring said the children and driver had escaped without injury.

Paramedics and local authorities remained on the scene until the children were removed.
