Mahikeng - Construction of almost 600 houses would be fast-tracked to bring relief to families affected by recent storms, North West provincial human settlements MEC said on Friday.

A consultant was expected to start work immediately to assess and quantify the damage caused to houses in Bloemhof and Taung, Desbo Mohono said.

This would speed up the construction of the emergency housing.

About 200 mud houses were damaged in the villages of Matolong, Manokoane, Nhone, and Ranstad in Taung when storms devastated the area earlier this month.

A further 180 low-cost houses in Coverdale were also affected.

The R33m housing project would pay for the 601 low-cost houses in Bloemhof Extension Five, where 165 shacks were destroyed.
