Pretoria - Seven people have been arrested during violent clashes between protesters and police outside the embassy of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in Pretoria on Tuesday, police said.

Captain Kay Makhubela said the arrests were made after the protesters damaged the property of the embassy.

Those arrested would be charged with malicious intent to damage to property.

Earlier, police fired stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse protesters.

Makhubela could not confirm reports that one of the men arrested had a firearm.

Paramedics were on the scene attending to injured protesters.

Meanwhile, reports from the DRC say police have fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of young people on the streets of the capital, Kinshasa.

Angry demonstrators had put up barricades and demanded that Congolese President Joseph Kabila step down after his mandate expired after midnight on Monday.
