Johannesburg - Five people, including a baby, were killed overnight in parts of KwaZulu-Natal during severe weather conditions, the province's Emergency Medical Services said on Saturday.

In Umlazi, south of Durban, two people were killed and three others injured in separate incidents when two informal shacks collapsed on Friay night, said spokesperson Robert Mckenzie.

In another incident a tree had fallen on a shack. Mckenzie was unable to clarify if anyone was injured or killed in this incident.

In Mariannhill, one person was killed and another critically injured when their mud dwelling collapsed during a heavy downpour.

Mckenzie said another two people were killed in Pietermaritzburg when their houses were struck by lightning. One was a five-day-old baby girl from Sweetwaters, and the other was a 77-year-old man from Tailors Halt.

"There were also several reports of severe hailstorm in the Pietermaritzburg, Stanger and Ixopo areas, which caused extensive damage to houses and vehicles," he said.

Meanwhile, two people have been killed in a motorbike accident near Bloemfontein, paramedics in the Free State said.

The incident happened on Friday evening on the N8, ER24 said in a statement.

"Paramedics from ER24 Bloemfontein that arrived on the scene found two people, a man and a woman, with fatal injuries," it said.

"Unfortunately there was nothing that paramedics could do for them and they were declared dead on the scene."

It is alleged that the man and woman were both on the motorbike and had hit into the back of a truck.
