Mbombela - Seven people died and seven others were seriously injured on Friday morning when a minibus taxi and a four-wheel-drive vehicle collided on the N4 between Mbombela and Malelane, the Mpumalanga community safety department said.

"Seven people died, five in the minibus and two in the... [other vehicle]," said spokesperson Moeti Mmusi.

"Seven people were seriously injured and rushed to …hospital."

Community safety MEC Vusi Shongwe expressed his sadness at the accident.

"Too many lives are being lost on the roads," he said.

With school holidays currently under way, Shongwe called on all motorists in the province to drive cautiously and responsibly.

"Law enforcement officers will be all out to ensure any mischief on the roads will be dealt with," he said.

He wished those injured in the accident a speedy recovery and offered his condolences to the family and friends of those killed.
