Johannesburg - Seven people were killed in a head-on collision on the N14 between Ventersdorp and Krugersdorp on Saturday, paramedics said.

It appeared that a sedan and a bakkie collided when thick smoke from a nearby veld fire reduced visibility to zero, ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said in a statement.

“As paramedics were declaring the initial five adults deceased, including three men and two women, they found a 9-month-old baby boy that had also been involved in the crash. He too had sustained such extensive injuries that he was declared dead,” Jackson said.

Later, an injured woman who was airlifted to Fourways Life hospital had died as a result of the injuries that she sustained.

The people travelling in the bakkie were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"A 7-year-girl who was in the bakkie suffered a broken leg and was transported by ambulance to Leratong hospital."
