Johannesburg - Seven people died and 16 were injured in four separate accidents on the N12 in North West, paramedics said on Monday.

The accidents all happened on Sunday night, ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said.

Two bakkies collided on the N12 in the direction of Klerksdorp around 20:00.

Two adults and a 3-year-old boy were killed.

"A further 11 patients were treated by paramedics at the scene and transported by ambulance to local hospitals for care of minor and moderate injuries," Jackson said.

Paramedics were then called back to the scene for another accident.

"Police had remained at the scene for forensic purposes and as they were flagging down motorists to re-route them through Ikageng, another bakkie did not stop and it crashed through the scene of the first accident," Jackson said.

The bakkie hit a police vehicle and the driver was killed on impact.

Around 23:00 paramedics were called to the N12 in the direction of Johannesburg where a man was killed while crossing the highway.

"A group of people were attempting to cross the highway and a light motor vehicle then collided into one of them. Sadly, the young man in his 20's did not survive," Jackson said.

Around the same time, at the N12 Fochville four-way stop, a Toyota Auris and a Chrysler Voyager collided, killing two women believed to be in their late 30s.

"Three other adults and two children were transported to hospital from the scene for treatment of their injuries," Jackson said.
