7 quirky stories of the week

Cape Town - In a week dominated by looting in Soweto, Guptagate, Sunette Bridges, Eskom, AFCON, national key points and Jackie Selebi, News24 rounds up some of the lighter and quirkier stories you may have missed.

1. Getting streetwise
After last week's furore about Cape Town naming a major road after former president FW de Klerk, many were a little surprised to hear that there's already a street named after him.

2. Traffic light teacher gets a bursary

Talking of streets - a heart-warming story about the Johannesburg traffic light teacher who teaches motorists Zulu words for R1 went viral, leading to him being given a bursary to study.

3. Visiting dog brings joy to old-age home

Another heart-warming story came from Pietermaritzburg, where residents of an old-age home told how regular visits from a Border Collie named Rodger were the highlight of their week.

4. Die-hard seagull recovers from cricket ball KO

Another animal made the news, for very different reasons. A seagull, now named Lazarus, was knocked out during the KFC T20 Big Bash League clash at the Melbourne cricket ground only to make a full recovery and attack the fielder who helped the bird get back on its feet.

5. 'Unruly' SA woman fined R137k for diverting international flight

Talking of flying, a Sandton woman has been fined R137 000 after she pleaded guilty to endangering an aircraft. She caused an Air Canada plane to divert when she verbally assaulted flight attendants and doused one with water. She was upset that she couldn't sit with her husband and her TV didn't work on the flight from London to Toronto.

6. Stupid teen gets stuck in Australian club roof

Still Down Under, a "remarkably stupid" Irish teenager was fined after firefighters had to rescue him when he got stuck in the roof of a nightclub he was trying to enter without paying.

7. SA's secret porn viewing habits

And finally, as the weekend approaches, you may be interested in taking a peek at the secret porn viewing habits of South Africans. Friday is apparently the least popular day for viewing porn, but Sunday is the most popular. Read more here.
