Johannesburg - Seven women are included in the list of candidates recommended to President Jacob Zuma for appointment as judges, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) said on Thursday.

"Of all the nine recommended candidates, seven of them are women. This serves as a clear indication of the JSC's commitment to the provisions of 174(2) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa," the JSC said.

"The JSC still wishes to encourage the legal fraternity and the broader South African public to encourage and nominate more women who are fit and proper for judicial appointment."

It was only through such nominations that the JSC would be able to discharge its constitutional mandate of transforming the judiciary to reflect the demographics of South Africa's population.

The women recommended for places on the Bench were IT Stretch (Eastern Cape High Court), S Pather (Electoral Court), S Naidoo (Free State High Court), MM Jansen, NJ van Niewenhuizen, and SS Mphahlele (High Courts in Gauteng), and NP Boqwana (Western Cape High Court).

The remaining two recommendations were Judge PL Tlaletsi for the position of Deputy Judge President of the Labour and Labour Appeal Court, and AJ Bam for the High Courts in Gauteng.

The JSC conducted interviews for the vacancies in Cape Town last week.

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng met Zuma on Tuesday to present the JSC's recommendations.
