Johannesburg - Eight men have been arrested for robbing a truck transporting R940 000 worth of cigarettes along the N1 near the Grasmere toll plaza, Johannesburg metro police said on Wednesday.

The men were arrested on Tuesday afternoon, spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

"The suspects transferred the cigarettes... over into a minibus and were on their way to an address in Kibler Park when officers intercepted them."

The group faces robbery and theft charges.

They would appear in court soon, Minnaar added.
