Durban – A 31-year-old man who lured his 9-year-old cousin into his room with chips, and then attempted to rape her, has been sentenced to eight years in prison, police said on Thursday.

In a statement, police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the Empangeni Regional Court had convicted and sentenced the perpetrator from Matshana Reserve after he was found guilty of attempted rape and sexual assault.

"On December 7 2014, the accused called his 9-year-old cousin to his room and promised to give her some chips. As she entered the room, he grabbed her and tried to rape her. The victim fled and the accused's attempt failed.

"The victim reported the incident to the elders... a case was opened at Empangeni Police Station. It was transferred to the Empangeni family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit for investigation.

"The FCS detectives thoroughly investigated the matter, which led to the arrest of the accused in March 2015, [and] he was taken to court for prosecution until his successful conviction."

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the detectives on the conviction.

"We would like to reiterate that sexual predators have no place in our society except spending their future behind bars. We praise the detective who... investigated this case and managed to secure this sentence," she said.
