2013-03-12 15:15

Cape Town residents were treated to dramatic scenes when the city's disaster management scheduled a cruise ship disaster drill in the city.WATCH

Cape Town – Around 800 000 polystyrene containers were on fire on a fishing ship in the Cape Town harbour on Wednesday morning, the city's fire services said.

Spokesperson Liezl Moodie said five crew members have been evacuated from the ship Verano Port Villa, no injuries were reported.

Six firefighting vehicles were attending to the incident. The ship, operating under the Vanuatu flag, had 100 000 litres of diesel on board.

Thick grey plumes of smoke billowed from the vessel docked in the container basement of the harbour, as jets of water were aimed at it.

A helicopter hovered relatively low, monitoring the unfolding scene.

Port control employees said all staff on duty were trying to deal with the situation and no one was immediately available to take media queries.
