Port Elizabeth - A farmer apprehended an alleged robber on his farm near Kirkwood, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

The 18-year-old man apparently broke into the farmer's house through a window around 21:00 on Saturday, Warrant Officer Gerda Swart said.

The man confronted the 81-year-old farmer in the passage and stabbed him in the arm.

"A struggle between the man and the suspect ensued. The farmer called his wife for assistance and the suspect was shot in the left arm."

The farmer apprehended his attacker and called the police. Both he and the attacker received medical treatment.

The teenager was charged with housebreaking with intent to rob. He would appear in the Kirkwood Magistrate's Court soon.
