Bloemfontein – Free State police have launched a manhunt after an elderly woman was attacked at her home in the Westerbloem Retirement Village in Wilgehof, Bloemfontein, police said on Thursday.

Spokesperson Chaka Marope said the woman was attacked with a blunt object.

The 86-year-old was discovered by her neighbour on Thursday morning after he noticed her sliding door was open, he said.

"The woman was unconscious and sustained serious bodily injuries."

She was later rushed to the Bloemfontein Medi-Clinic.

Marope said the suspects might have used a water canal at the back of the house to gain access.

A case of house robbery was opened.
