Johannesburg - Nine people were arrested in Yeoville, Johannesburg on Friday in connection with a robbery at a cellphone shop in Heidelberg earlier in the day, Gauteng police said.

The men were tracked from Heidelberg to Johannesburg and found in possession of two bags full of cellphones, Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said.

"We found them with the stolen cellphones... and we also found them in possession of seven unlicensed firearms - five pistols and two AK-47s."

‘Suspects we’re looking for’

Police were investigating whether the group was connected to other cellphone shop robberies in the province.

"These might be the suspects we've been looking for," Makhubela said.

"We are still investigating if we can link them to other cases."

The nine will be charged with business robbery, possession of stolen property and possession of unlicensed firearms.

They are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
