Bloemfontein - Nine people, two of them children, were killed when a VW Polo and Ford Laser collided head-on north of Bloemfontein, Free State paramedics said on Monday.

The accident happened on the R30 between Brandford and Theunissen on Sunday night, said ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak.

"Both vehicles sustained extensive damage with one of the vehicles lying several metres away on its roof next to the road," said Vermaak.

Paramedics found all the occupants of the Ford still trapped in the vehicle.

"None of them showed any signs of life," said Vermaak.

The occupants of the VW Polo were ejected from their vehicle. They were found near the wreckage.

Seven people, including the two children, were declared dead on the scene while two others who were critically injured were rushed to Pelonomi Hospital. They later died.

Police were investigating the cause of the crash.
