Johannesburg - Nine out of 10 young South Africans plan to take part in Mandela Day, a survey revealed on Wednesday.

Of the 16 046 respondents in the survey 89%  said they intended donating 67 minutes of their time to a good cause on former president Nelson Mandela's birthday, consumer insights company Pondering Panda said.

"These figures show we can expect a very high level of enthusiasm regarding participation on Mandela Day on Thursday," spokeswperson Shirley Wakefield said.

Inspire change

"It shows that among South Africa’s youth, Mandela Day is achieving its goal of encouraging people to take action, and in doing so, inspire change."

She said Mandela Day was clearly a concept which brought young South Africans together.

According to the survey, past participation in Mandela Day was also high.

Of those surveyed 65% said they had taken part in Mandela Day before, while 33% said they had not.

There was little difference in opinion among demographic groups, Wakefield said.

Thursday is Mandela's 95th birthday. The ailing icon was admitted to hospital on 8 June with a recurring lung infection.
